Video Summary
The webinar reviewed MedAxiom’s 2026 APP compensation and utilization survey, focusing on how cardiovascular practices are using advanced practice providers (APPs) across ambulatory, acute, ICU, and procedural settings. Speakers emphasized that APPs are now central to cardiovascular workforce strategy, with nearly 90% of programs using them in ambulatory care and 81% in acute care.

A major theme was leadership: APP-led or shared leadership models are becoming more common, reflecting a shift toward clearer accountability, role development, and strategic oversight. The panel stressed that APP leaders need authority, autonomy, resources, and protected time to maximize team performance.

Karen Wilson presented benchmarking data showing that physician capacity per 1,000 active patients has declined while APP capacity and productivity have increased. Median cardiology APP productivity surpassed 2,000 work RVUs in 2025, continuing a multi-year upward trend. Compensation also rose, and more programs now offer productivity incentives, call pay, and CME support.

The discussion highlighted that productivity alone does not capture APP value. The speakers encouraged leaders to measure access, wait times, continuity, patient satisfaction, outcomes, and physician efficiency. Subspecialty deployment is becoming more strategic, especially in EP, structural heart, and cardiac surgery, where APP roles are expanding.

Workforce sustainability was another key focus. Although APP productivity is rising, fewer are working excessive hours, suggesting more standardized scheduling. However, burnout and workload remain concerns, especially in ICU and acute care. Onboarding was presented as both a competency and retention strategy, with structured mentorship and clear expectations critical to success.

The webinar closed with practical takeaways: strengthen leadership, align APP deployment with demand, measure what matters, tailor models by setting, and invest in onboarding and retention.
