Pdf Summary
This survey report conducted by MedAxiom provides insights into the staffing trends, coverage needs, program challenges, and predictions for growth in the field of structural heart care. The survey received responses from 95 cardiovascular procedure programs across the USA, representing various healthcare organizations. These programs collectively performed almost 24,000 structural heart procedures and employed 500 structural heart staff.

The majority of structural heart teams are composed of various types of staff, with most staff being employed by the hospital or health system. The roles of the staff include advanced practice providers (APPs), registered nurses (RNs), medical assistants (MA)/cardiovascular technicians, patient representatives or equivalents, abstractors, pre-certification staff, and others.

The survey revealed that the most common staff role in structural heart programs is the structural heart coordinator, with 98% of programs having dedicated coordinators. Most programs use RNs or APPs in this role, and coordinators often cover multiple procedures.

Dedicated coordinators predominantly focus on supporting transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) procedures. The coordinators are responsible for tasks such as patient tracking, scheduling, patient education, workflow facilitation, and quality assurance.

The survey also found that 76% of programs have a centralized structural heart clinic, which operates as a hospital outpatient department. These clinics typically have less than 5 hours of clinic time per procedure.

Regarding procedure staffing, the survey identified a variety of staffing models for different structural heart procedures. Anesthesia providers, perfusionists, TTE/TEE physicians, RNs in the operating room and catheterization lab, surgical techs/scrubs, cardiovascular or radiology technicians, echo sonographers, and other staff are involved in the procedural team.

The survey report also touched upon other topics such as national coverage determination waivers, program growth, program economics, referral throughput metrics, and program optimization assessment.

Overall, this survey report provides valuable information about staffing and operational aspects of structural heart programs, allowing healthcare organizations to evaluate their own program performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
