Pdf Summary
Ardent Health and Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Abiomed heart-recovery team partnered to build a system-wide Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) program playbook. The collaboration began with discovery in March 2025, where Ardent identified four priorities: improving right-level-of-care decisions, educating referring physicians on HRPCI, training hospitals and transfer sites on AMICS/HRPCI patient identification, and using ER section meetings to drive identification and education.

These priorities were refined in an executive summit in May 2025, attended by 20 participants across six workstreams. The summit produced a 2025 Plan of Action, a prioritized list of 15 opportunities, and clear ownership and timelines. Monthly Executive Progress Reviews helped track progress, while J&J MedTech resources such as Field Reimbursement and POET teams were aligned to each need. A key step was adopting SCAI staging system-wide so everyone used the same language to assess cardiogenic shock.

Execution moved from strategy to action through alignment of internal resources, order sets, pathways, transfer processes, and clinician education. This work culminated in the Mechanical Circulatory Support Playbook, distributed to service line administrators. The playbook includes growth projections, device information, development steps, shock team roles, shock criteria, transfer protocols, standard order sets, outreach plans, and ongoing committee meetings.

Looking ahead to 2026, Ardent plans a system-wide rollout of the playbook, a Shock Talk speaker series, an MCS Advisory Board, and AI-assisted SCAI staging. The main lessons shared were: start with system priorities, document the action plan, build a common language, and treat the playbook as a starting point for continuous improvement.
